It has been reported that five persons who had set sail from the Chilaw sea belt for fishing have gone missing.

Police media spokesman's office said that while these fishermen had set sail on 16th far into the sea for fishing, a complaint had been lodged to the effect that no information has been received about them even by now.

Statements have been obtained from about 10 persons with regard to the recovery of three scorched dead bodies from a house in Kaldemulla, Mt. Lavinia.

The three bodies were found on information received at the Police Emergency Call Unit last morning.

The United Nations World Food Programme has agreed to provide Sri Lanka food items worth 4,524 million rupees during the next two years.
WFP Resident Director Mads Lofvall handed over the related document to Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the ministry office.
The financial assistance from January 1^st, 2013 to December 2014 is expected to cover maternal and child nutrition, food for those whose work involves risk, lunch for school children, benefiting a total of 325 thousnd per year.

A mother and her two children were killed after a fire had erupted at a house in Kaldemulla, Ratmalana this morning.

It has been reported that the charred bodies of the three were found on the bed inside the house.

450 university students stranded at Hanthane rescued.

Military media spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that more than 450 students of two universities who had got stranded in a trip to cross the Hantana mountain range had been rescued.
The military media spokesperson said that while these students from the Vavuniya and Sri Jayewardenepura Universities had thus crossed the Hantaana Mountain last morning, they had got stranded due to the heavy fog, rain and cold weather.
Military media spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that the army had carried out the rescue operation with the cooperation of the Kandy, Peradeniya and Galaha police stations.
The Kandy hospital spokesperson said that currently 43 rescued students were receiving treatment as internal patients.
Reports say that while there are 42 girls among these students, they receive treatment at the hospital due to the extreme chill.
All the other rescued students have by now been released from the hospital after being admitted to the Kandy hospital and given emergency treatment.

The National Transport Commission says that jointly with the police a special programme will be implemented from today for arresting persons who obtain ransom from buses.

Four persons were killed and 10 others wounded in vehicle accident that had taken place at the Waliwita junction on the Colombo - Kaduwela road  last night.

Examinations Commissioner makes complaint to CID

The Examination Commissioner General has lodged a complaint with the CID with regard to an incident where a model paper had been provided for the Science question paper number 01 which was held yesterday.

The Ministry of Education previously decided to prohibit the issuing of model papers within one week from an examination to curb examination fraud.

However, a group of parents in Colombo had complained to the Examinations department that a teacher had provided a model paper for the science exam upon which the Examinations Commissioner General has requested the CID to conduct an investigation.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Lanka Teachers Association stated that investigations should be carried out in to the incidents and the truth should be conveyed to the students.

The Supreme Court stated today that its decision regarding the Parliamentary Select Committee which investigated the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranaike would be forwarded to the appeals court shortly.

The petitions filed in this regard were taken up before a three judge panel consisting justices Nimal Gamini Amarathunga, K. Sri Pawan & Priyasad Depp.

7 petitions filed challenging the PSC as well as another 7 petitions urging court to intervene on their behalf were taken up before the Supreme Court yesterday.

However court did not grant permission to intervene on behalf of the latter petitions yesterday.

Subsequent to the presentation of further facts by Attorney General Palitha Fernando who has been cited as a respondent, the petitions were arbitrated before court today.

Attorney at law Krishmal Warnasooriya who appeared on behalf of the petitions filed against the process adopted by the PSC expressed his views to the media in the following manner.


The 7 petitions challenging the role of the PSC were filed by various civil & political institutions.

During the recent past information regarding the exotic dancer Nirosha Wimalarathne has been published in the media following her involvement in the incident concerning a cobra.

However upon inquiry by our news team many discrepancies were uncovered regarding what was expressed by her and what was discovered by our news team.

Nirosha Wimalarathne first came into media spotlight after the police received an emergency call stating that an exotic dancer was performing in a night club in Colpetty with a cobra.

She was arrested by the Colpetty police on the 28^th of August and her cobra was also confiscated by the police and she was subsequently released on bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and the cobra was handed over to the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens by the authorities.

Although Nirosha Wimalarathne had stated to the media that her mother was of Indian origin, her birth certificate states that her mother is Sri Lankan.

She had also stated to media that she studied in Sri Lanka till grade 8 and that she then left for India to complete her studies.

However, according to the results released by the department of examinations, she has sat for her O/Level examination at the Danthure examination centre in 2007.

Although she had stated that she had obtained the cobra while meditating at the Dodamwala Dewalaya in Kandy, it has been revealed that she had purchased the cobra from a gypsy for 20 thousand rupees.

Mathews ready to accept leadership role.

Angelo Mathews has expressed enthusiasm for the leadership role and appears ready to take over the captaincy once Sri Lanka's current Test captain Mahela Jayawardene, steps down.

Jayawardene accepted the post reluctantly in January, and has seemed eager to be rid of the reins ever since.

Mathews who is already Sri Lanka's T20 captain says, that he thinks this is totally up to the selectors, and if they think he’s ready for the captaincy, then he is.

Geological and mines bureau has begun a special probe with regard to various tremors occurring in the Ampara District being reported only during day time.

Geological and mine excavations bureau chairman Dr. N. P. Wijayananda told our news team that the occurrence of earth quakes too was taking place within a certain period of time and according to a certain pattern.

However the chairman said that investigation about the earthquakes that occur would continue without interruption.

Is the impeachment according to the constitution? Petitions requesting for an interpretation considered today.

Seven petitions that have been filed requesting for an interpretation with regard to the impeachment procedure will be considered before the Supreme Court today.

The Appeal Court had referred to the Supreme court the seven petitions that had been earlier filed before the Appeal Court challenging the impeachment procedure for obtaining an interpretation as to whether the impeachment procedure was in accordance with the constitution.

It is in accordance with this these seven petitions are scheduled to be taken up before the Supreme Court today.

While these petitions will be considered before a Supreme Court three-member bench of judges, Justices Nimal Gamini Amaratunga, K. Sripavan and Priyasaad Dep constitute the three-member bench of judges.

Meanwhile a Monk and four other persons have submitted five petitions before the Supreme Court requesting that investigation of the said seven petitions be refused.

The five petitions say that an interpretation is not required as the PSC on impeachment has been appointed in accordance with the constitution.

Similarly two petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court saying that Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga who is a member of the three-member bench which considers the relevant petition was not suitable for serving on the bench.

The petition says that Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga constituting the three-member bench is a member of the Judicial Services Commission.

The statement the President had recently made to the effect that steps would be taken to have the impeachment report re-investigated by an independent committee has by now  become an important topic at political platforms.

Participating at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya too expressed his views with regard to the subject.

On this occasion the MP said that it would be important for the people and the country if the President would reinvestigate it through an independent committee.


President of the Bar Association, President's Council Wijedasa Rajapaksa noted that the president's proposal had provided attorneys with a new glimmer of hope.

 එහෙත් මහාචාර්ය නලින් ද සිල්වා හිරු ප‍්‍රවෘත්ති අංශයට මේ පිළිබඳ තම ස්ථාවරය මෙලෙස ප‍්‍රකාශ කළා.

මේ අතර, අද (12) රැස්වූ එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයේ කෘත්‍යාධිකාරී මණ්ඩලයේදීද අගවිනිසුරුවරියට එරෙහිව ඉදිරිපත් වී ඇති දෝෂාභියෝගය සම්බන්ධයෙන් සාකච්ඡා වී තිබෙනවා. විපක්ෂයේ සාමාජිකයන් 04 දෙනා ඉල්ලා අස්වන බව පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට දැනුම් දුන්නේ පසුගිය 08 වැනිදා පෙරවරු 10 න් පසුව බව මේ පිළිබඳ එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය නිකුත් කළ නිවේදනයේ සඳහන්. දෝෂාභියෝග කමිටුවේ වාර්තාව කතානායකවරයාට භාර දුන්නේ එදින පෙරවරු 09 ට පෙර බවද එහි දැක්වෙනවා. ඒ අනුව වාර්තාව භාර දෙන විට විපක්ෂයේ 04 දෙනාද කමිටුවේ නීත්‍යානුකූල සාමාජිකයන්. එහෙත් ඔවුන් නොසලකා හැර වාර්තාව ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමෙන් එහි වලංගුතාවක් නොමැති බවයි එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය පවසන්නේ. කෘත්‍යාධිකාරී මණ්ඩලයේදී අද සම්මත කෙරුණු ස්වාධීන කමිටු යෝජනාව පිළිබඳව පැහැදිලි කරන එම පක්ෂයේ මහ ලේකම් තිස්ස අත්තනායක.


      කෙසේ වෙතත් ජනතා විමුක්ති පෙරමුණ කොළඹදී මාධ්‍ය හමුවක් කැඳවමින් කියා සිටියේ අගවිනිසුරුවරියට එරෙහිව ඉදිරිපත් වී ඇති තේරීම් කමිටු වාර්තාව ඉල්ලා අස්කර ගත යුතු බවයි. මාධ්‍ය හමුවට එක්වෙමින් ඒ සම්බන්ධයෙන් වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස් දැක්වූ එම පක්ෂයේ පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත‍්‍රී අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක.

2013 වසර සඳහා එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයේ නව නිලධාරී මණ්ඩලය පත් කිරීම ජනවාරි 10 වැනිදායින් පසුව සිදුකිරීමට අද (12) පැවති එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ කෘත්‍යාධිකාරී මණ්ඩලය තීරණය කළා. ඒ අනුව පක්ෂයේ නියෝජ්‍ය නායක ධුරය, ජාතික සංවිධායක ධුරය ඇතුළු අනෙකුත් තනතුරු එලෙස පත් කෙරෙනු ඇති. පක්ෂ නායකත්වය වසර 6 ක් දක්වා දීර්ඝ කිරීමේ යෝජනාවක් පසුගියදා සම්මත කරගත් අතර එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ ව්‍යවස්ථාවට අනුව මහ ලේකම්වරයා සහ භාණ්ඩාගාරිකවරයා පත් කරන්නේ පක්ෂ නායකත්වය විසින්. එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයට නව සාමාජිකයින් බඳවා ගැනීමේ වැඩපිළිවෙල ජනවාරි 07 වැනිදා සිට ආරම්භ කිරීමටද අද පැවති කෘත්‍යාධිකාරී මණ්ඩල රැස්වීමේදී තීරණය කර තිබෙනවා.

අගවිනිසුරු ආචාර්ය ශිරාණි බණ්ඩාරනායකට එරෙහිව ඉදිරිපත් වී තිබූ දෝෂාභියෝගය විමර්ශනය කළ ක‍්‍රමවේදයට විරෝධය පළ කරමින් දිවයින පුරා නීතීඥයින් සිය සේවා කටයුතුවලින් ඉවත්වී අද උදෑසන පැයක කාලයක් විරෝධතාවයක නිරතවුණා. පෙරවරු 10 සිට 11 දක්වා පැවති මෙම විරෝධතාවයට ශ‍්‍රී ලංකා නීතීඥ සංගමයට අනුබද්ධ නීතීඥ සංගම් 80 ක පමණ සාමාජිකයින් 14000 ක් පමණ එක්ව සිටි බවයි ශ‍්‍රී ලංකා නීතීඥ සංගමය ප‍්‍රකාශ කළේ. මෙම කාලයේදී අධිකරණ තුළ නඩු විභාග කටයුතු සිදු නොවූ බව හිරු අධිකරණ වාර්තාකරුවන් ප‍්‍රකාශ කළා. උතුරු පළාතේ මෙන්ම මහනුවර, කොළඹ - කොටුව මහේස්ත‍්‍රාත් අධිකරණයේ සහ දිසා අධිකරණයේ නීතීඥවරුන් සිය රාජකාරිවලින් බැහැරවීම නිසා අද දිනයේ එම අධිකරණ තුළ නඩු විභාගයට ගැනීම සිදු නොවූ බවයි හිරු වාර්තාකරුවන් සඳහන් කළේ.

බලපිටිය අධිකරණ සංකීර්ණය ඉදිරිපිටදී නීතීඥවරුන් පිරිසක් මෙවැනිම විරෝධතාවයක් සංවිධානය කර තිබූ අතර අගවිනිසුරුවරියට එරෙහිව ඉදිරිපත්වූ දෝෂාභියෝගයට පක්ෂව තවත් විරෝධතාවයක් ඒ ආසන්නයේම පැවැත්වුණා. එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානයේ බලපිටිය ප‍්‍රාදේශීය සභාවේ මන්ත‍්‍රිවරුන් පිරිසක් සහ තවත් ප‍්‍රාදේශීය දේශපාලනඥයින් කිහිපදෙනෙකුද ඊට එක්ව සිටියා. එහිදී අදහස් දැක්වූ බලපිටිය ප‍්‍රාදේශීය සභාවේ ආණ්ඩු පක්ෂ මන්ත‍්‍රී අනිල් ප‍්‍රියන්ත.



කෙසේ වෙතත් නීතීඥවරුන් විසින් අද පැවැත්වූ විරෝධතාවය නිසා නඩු විභාග සඳහා පැමිණි ජනතාව දැඩි අපහසුතාවයන්ට ලක්ව සිටි බවයි හිරු අධිකරණ වාර්තාකරුවන් ප‍්‍රකාශ කළේ. නඩු විභාගයට වැල්ලවාය අධිකරණ සංකීර්ණය වෙත එලෙස පැමිණි ජනතාවගෙන් කිහිපදෙනෙකු හිරු ප‍්‍රවෘත්ති අංශයට තමන් මුහුණ පෑ අපහසුතාවයන් මෙලෙස පැහැදිලි කළා.

Obstructions to court activities in several areas; A one hour protest islandwide tomorrow as well.

Court activities were faced with obstruction as a result of lawyers in various areas boycotting their duties in protest against the impeachment against the Chief Justice.

While lawyers in several courts have decided to refrain from their duties tomorrow as well, lawyers island-wide will engage in a one-hour agitation.

Lawyers at the Colombo High Court, Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court and District Court are scheduled to refrain from their duties the whole of tomorrow.

Colombo High Court Bar Association Secretary Attorney-at-law Karunaratne Lansaakaara spoke to our news team with regard to the boycott as follows:


In addition while a special meeting of the High Court Bar Association will be held tomorrow, the decision with regard to the line of action they will adopt in the future will be taken at this meeting.

In addition Northern Province lawyers have decided to refrain from their duties from today till Friday.

In addition lawyers of the Galle, Matara and Mt. Lavinia district courts refrained from their duties.

In addition a group of lawyers had also convened a media conference in Colombo today.

Participating at the media briefing Attorney-at-law J. C. Weliamuna said that the BASL had officially decided to refrain from their duties for one hour from 10 to 11 tomorrow morning.


The line of action that should be adopted in the future with regard to the impeachment against the Chief Justice will be decided upon at the BASL general convention that has been convened for 15th this month.

Japanese national who used Panda instead of lion in the National Flag arrested.

The Mount Lavinia police arrested a Japanese who was alleged to have printed a distorted version of the Sri Lankan national flag on post cards.

The man had distorted the national flag by replacing the image of the lion with a panda.
He was produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate and was remanded until the 20^th of this month.
He was arrested at the Mount Lavinia Post Office while in the process of mailing the 42 post cards to Japan.

Kandy fire reveals suspicious body

Kandy police have started a special investigation on the body found near the four shops that were burnt down in D. S. Senanayake road in Kandy.
Two jewellery shops and two building material shops caught fire today around 3.30 a.m.
The police stated that the body was discovered during the investigations.
The deceased was identified as Periyanannan Naguleshwaran. The 35 year old victim was a resident of Mahakanda – Hindigala area.
Periyanannan Naguleshwaran, had been involved in a fight with one of the owners of a jewellery shop.
The preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect had set the jewellery shop on fire.
The police stated that the suspect had then committed suicide by consuming poison because he had thought that he had been identified by the villagers.

However JVP parliamentarian Anura Dissanayeke opposed the president's decision regarding an independent committee.
